The events of the Pohela Boishakh are open the New Book (Halkhata) by the businessmen for the purpose of the financial affair, home visits to friends, horse races, cockfights, bullfights, boat race etc. The Bengali New Year is celebrated most colorfully with songs, widely sang son is “Esho hey Boishakh, Esho, Esho..” (Oh Boishakh, come, come...), and traditional dances in Dhaka at Ramna Batamul and Chhayanat.

The most other celebrated parts of the Pohela Boishakh are having “Panta Ilish” (overnight water-soaked, boiled-rice with the fry of Hilsha fish) and a gorgeous, colorful processions with many types of historical and legendary items like tigers, owls etc in Dhaka along with all over the country. Most of the participants of the day got dressed with traditional “Shari” for the women and Pajama-Punjabi for the men and children.

2. Eid-ul-fitr and Eid-ul-Azha

The Eid-UL-Fitr and Eid-UL-Azha both are the festivals of the Muslim community and followed by the Arabic lunar calendar. The holy Eid-ul-fitr comes after a long term fasting of the Arabic month named Ramadan with a lot of joy and happiness to the Muslims along with a great occasion of a gathering of all sorts of people at the same ground. It becomes the part of Bengali festival of the cultures and colors of the country over the time passed.


Eid-UL-Azha is also the great festival the Muslims and almost similarly celebrates like the Eid ul-Azha without the single major differences of the Qurbani (sacrificing domestic and Islam legalized animals). The festival is mostly rejoicing with beef and mutton along with some traditional foods, such as Polao, Biriyani, Shemai etc.

3. Durga Puja

The biggest festival of the Hindu community, Durag Puja, is celebrated at the name of Hindu Goddess Durga who holds 10 different arms sculptured s straddling on a lion. At this occasion, the people of the Hindu community buy new dresses as well as many souvenirs. Some places of puja areas arrange fairs, where several types of are sold.


4. Dubla Rash Mela Near Sundarban

The largest fair of the whole Bangladesh, Dubla Rash Mela in the Dubla island of world famous Sundarban, is held in Bagerhat district located in the southern part of the country. It’s the splendid occasion of huge foreign tourists who visit Sundarban can easily travel to Dubla Rash Mela, which is celebrated in the Bengali month of Agrahayan (November or December) each year and continue the fair up to 7 days.

5. Bashanto Utshob


The festival named Bashanto Utshob (Yellow/Spring Fest) is also known as the Pohela Falgun, which is celebrated on 13th of February each year. The day is the first day of the Bengali month Falgun and celebrated by the young ladies with red-bordered yellow shari and beautiful flowers and men dressed with traditional Punjabi and Pajama. A colorful procession comes out with yellow dresses and flowers.

6. Lalon Mela

A prominent, acclaimed philosopher and music artist of Bangladesh is Lalon Shah. His traditional distinctive philosophies are still being sung and researching through out hundreds of songs that he wrote in his lifetime. He knows as the “Baul Samrat” (The Emperor of the Folk songs). Lalon Mela is named for him and conducted on the 1st week of the month of April is organized by his followers in his birth anniversary at the Lalon Akhra in the district of Kushtia.

7. Shakrail Ghuri Utshob (Kite Festival of Shakrail)

Another amazing cultural and traditional festival is Shakrail Ghuri Utshob. This is the most ancient as well as the popular kite festival, where young guys fly their various colored and types of kites on the event. It’s celebrated in old Dhaka still today widely and become the part of nation’s festivals.
